I advocate maximum learning. I believe that more is more. More books, more artists, more research, more techniques, more critiques, more dialogue, more questions, more answers!
Each new experience brings opportunity to become a better learner and a better teacher. Infusing action with my enthusiasm, I strive to connect students to learning through dialogue (verbal/auditory), visual examples and hands-on investigation. Even if students don’t start with a passion for the courses I teach, I share mine and plant seeds for their future engagement. Curriculum should have space to develop organically, incorporating the interests and research of the students it is meant to serve while supporting them as a community of learners.
I meet my students where they are with a goal of helping them to develop to the next level of their conceptual and perceptual abilities. This requires adaptability in me as an educator and in my students as learners. I support a classroom atmosphere where it is safe to take chances. This approach to teaching encourages learning that is fun and challenging. I always want to empower students. I consider my high expectations a gift, allowing students to achieve more than they initially believed of themselves.
There is a great exchange of energy and information in my classroom that inspires everyone to contribute as much to the dynamic as possible. It is important to be knowledgeable about all subjects that I teach so that I can approach them with confidence. However, I remain more interested in the people who are my students. The product is less important than class participation in the process. A positive learning environment instills in students two characteristics of life-long learners, curiosity and the courage to explore. These characteristics are also found in many artists.
